If you had met me a few weeks ago, you probably would have described me as an average teenage girl — someone normal. Now my life has changed forever and I'm as far away from normal as it gets. A living science experiment — not only can I see ghosts, but I was genetically altered by a sinister organization called the Edison Group. What does that mean? For starters, I'm a teenage necromancer whose powers are out of control; I raise the dead without even trying. Trust me, that is not a power you want to have. Ever.
Now I'm running for my life with three of my supernatural friends — a charming sorcerer, a cynical werewolf, and a disgruntled witch — and we have to find someone who can help us before the Edison Group finds us first. Or die trying.
When I finished this book the one thought I had was that it was obvious that all the books were well planned out. Each book has an obvious beginning, middle and end and are tightly narrated. So you get the definite sense that the story is going somewhere, and that there is a plan. A lot of times you hear that a series is going to be a certain amount of books, but 3 books turns into 6 which turns into 12 because the writer gets carried away and apparently fires their editor....that or they feel the need to drag things on for marketing reasons. When I finished reading this second installment I was pretty confident that the third and final book, as this planned as a trilogy, will be satisfying, and it will be the third and final book.
This installment starts exactly where the first leaves of: Chloe has been captured and held in the Edison groups facility along with Rae. While she is there, and despite their best efforts to convince her they are out of help here and she is being held for her own good, Chloe is not buying it and snoops around. She finds out that her suspicions about the group are correct, as well as her suspicions about fate of the kids that were taken from Lyle House in the previous book. She tells Rae, but Rae has been pulled into the lies told to her and chooses not to believe. So Chloe plans an escape, and gets unexpected help and company in spoiled Tori . They head out and meet back up with Derek and Simon and the four of them decide to travel to an old friend of Simon and Derek's father to see if he can help them fight the Edison group. Thus starts there travels full of danger and adventure...and some budding romance. This is always a nice plus.
The relationship hinted at in the first book are also further explored. Derek and Chloe, Simon and Chloe, and Tori and everyone. I of course am rooting for Derek...he is one poor misunderstood kid. And towards the end...hints are dropped that there are more surprises to come about the kids and their relationships to each other.
Final grade: A-
